Testing And Scheduling Of Weekly Definition Updates

Last portion of setting up virus scanning is to schedule a definition update at least twice a month or more and then testing the task is functioning properly.

To schedule a weekly live update of the definition on your server, go to your control panel and select Schedule Tasks.

Click Add Scheduled Task and when prompted for program location, browse to your NAV DOS folder select the batch file cegetter.bat. Next select the frequency and enter your administrator\'s username and password when prompted.

Tick Open advanced properties before clicking finish so that you can set the update time to be off office hours.

The advantage of using NAVDOS update is that is fully automated and there is no need to manually delete the old and then copy the new definitions to the definition directory.

To test the functionality of your virus scanner, create a email with the following text and send it to yourself.

X5O!P%@AP[4PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H*

This is known as the EICAR Test String meant for testing the functioning of your antivirus software. So it will not infect PCs, destroy files nor send copies of porn on a hard disk to girlfriends.

It should be detected as EICAR Test String as the name indicates. If you set the virus scanner to return the mails, it would be interesting to see the message bounce back to you because of virus and so forth.

The virus should have been removed first but it is not. The realtime scan should take care of it later on.
