Virus Prevention

Ensure virus scanning are done on all incoming and outgoing mails send via the server. Mercury has option to add a DOS mode virus scanner for all incoming mails. Unfortunately, the task will not run when you configure Mercury to run as a service. To make matter worse, your mails will get lost too. So ensure that you are logon after every restart on the server plus ensure your UPS can support the system long enough if there is chances of occurence of a power failure.

The server will also do a schedule update on a weekly basis to update the definition. Antivirus software (at least for the server) has to be purchased for this option to be available.

Even with weekly automated definition update, precaution still has to be taken when opening your emails as virus writer like to target period between updates to send out their latest version of virus.

Be careful with opening of attachment especially those that have extremely long name to hide the extension. Safest is to open only attachment that has been saved to disk, scanned after you have updated your definition. Ya, it is boring. It gets even more boring when you have to stand around your desk like a punished child while your system administrator cleans up the virus.
