Server Application Error


We were having a problem of setting up IIS on a server for a client's website consisting of some ASP pages. Everytime we try to start an ASP page, we get a Server Application Error.

Found the solution on a forum and it is to change the application protection(under the Home Directory tab)from medium to either low or high.


IIS Crash on NT4 SP6a


IIS server keeps crashing and restarting on one of our client's site even though the latest patches were already in placed. Sometime it will be alright for hours and then it will happen again. Sometime it will just be within few minutes. Its probably due to the worm infected machines that are hitting our ip block but we were not sure.

We removed the .ida/.idq mappings, removed idq.dll file and it stopped the crashing.

.ida/.idq mappings are found at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W3SVC\Parameters.

We would also suggest that you install URLSCAN that comes with IIS Lockdown Tools located at microsoft site because we have encounter a situation where we have completely patch a W2K server and it still got hit by a worm similiar to CODEREDII. We probably miss a patch during the update process.


Difference between Windows 98 SE OEM and Windows 98SE Upgrade


The difference between Windows 98SE OEM and Windows 98SE Upgrade version is only in one of the cabinet file - PRECOPY2.CAB. Other than that, it is completely similiar.

To migrate data plus application from a old hard drive to a new system, you will need to do a clone and then install an upgrade. However, your new system may come with a OEM license which does not allow you to install it over an existing Windows operating system. Thus replacing the PRECOPY2.CAB may comes in handy for scenario like this.

Email Procedure Entry Point Error


When you get "The procedure entry point WNetEnumCachedPasswords could not be located in the dynamic link library MPR.dll." error, it is usually caused by an incorrect mapi32.dll and/or mapisp32.exe version. Some software replaces the NT version of the above 2 files with the Windows 95/98 version.

In order to solve this problem, locate a copy of mapi32.dll and mapisp32.exe from a working Windows system of the same version as the one having the problem and copy it to your %systemroot%/system32. Alternative is to get a copy of Microsoft Office 2000 and copy the NT version from \PFILES\COMMON\SYSTEM\MAPI\1033\NT directory.


Disable Internet Explorer Update


It can be quite fustrating for some user to have their IE reporting to Microsoft site for Windows and IE Updates especially so when you prefer to do it manually yourself. How to disable Internet Explore updates ? IE Updates ?

To disable it, go to your Control Panel, Internet Options Advanced, uncheck Automatically check for Internet Explorer updates.

How to get files and folders to be listed in details or as those gigantic icons that tell you nothing about the files ?

To set a fixed view format for your folders, go to your Control Panel, Folder Options, View, then select Remember Each folder's view settings.


Ask Before Opening


You accidentally click on the check box and now it is no longer available. How to set "Always ask before opening this type of file" and "Would you like to open the file or save it to your computer ?"

Go to Folder Options, go to File Types, click on the the 3 letter extension of the file you are downloading, click Advanced, and select or check Confirm open after download.
