Maintenance tips the experts use 2/2
5. Use System File Checker and Scanreg before every software installation – see the section on DLL
hell.
6.Watch the amount of available space on your Windows drive and the amount of system resources. Odd problems occur when either gets low. Run a spot check on resources by typing Msinfo32 into the Run dialog. Anything much below 40 per cent puts you in the flakiness zone.
7. Keep it simple! An ornate Windows installation adorned with interface enhancements, OTT screen saver,
three-inch system tray and staggering font collection may be as sexy as stilettos, but it’s just as slow and accident-prone. Watch out for freebies that contain spy wares, check with us if you're unsure. Some spy wares will install themselves on your system without asking if you visit their site using un-patched version of IE. Once in, popup becomes more frequent, connection becomes slow and unstable.
8. Make a point of removing unused software. Delete temp files located in your Windows\TEMP folder that
are of earlier date than current.
9. Windows updates are available via Internet Explorer, Tools option. Ideally you should keep your
Windows updated to the most current patches, including your Office, Internet Explorer, Outlook Express even if you are not using them. IE 6 service pack 1 is the latest patch available at the moment.
