Illegal filenames
When a program crashes, junk data can be dumped on to the disk resulting in corrupted files.
These tend to belong to running programs or the operating system. System File Checker and Registry Checker may pick up problems, and
reinstalling Windows and affected programs over the top of themselves often patches the damage.
The other thing that may happen is that some filenames are sprayed with characters not allowed by Windows.
When you try to rename or delete such files, Explorer ducks out.
Many clever tricks have been devised to resolve this, but people often
miss the easy way out: run ScanDisk, click the Advanced button, and
make sure ‘Invalid filenames’ is turned on. Then set ScanDisk
going. This usually works.
