D-Link DSL500G Modem Router Review

For a modem router that is priced so cheap, the DSL500G has an impressive array of functionalities.

Particularly useful would be its built-in firewall feature and its IP filtering capabilities.

The DSL500G's firewall supports temporary blacklist that would drop connections that attempts to compromise or conduct DOS (Denial-Of-Service) attacks on it for a configurable specific period.

Its ability to restrict maximum allowed number of half open TCP connections (a DOS attempt to use up router resources through semi-completed TCP handshakes), ICMP connections (a DOS attempt to flood the router) and a maximum single host connection (particularly useful again host that has big bandwidth that can easily bring the router down with a lot of connections), 3 email IDs of administrators to inform or a trace send to a syslog server if there is suspicious activities that triggers the upper limit set forth by the firewall rules makes this a power packed router amongst its peers.

The IP Filter Configuration has a huge amount of pre-configured rules that can be utilized with an option to enable or disable Stateful Packet Inspection. SPI is a feature of firewalled routers that would inspect all incoming packets for its intended destinations, ports, packet sequences and compare it with a table that it keeps and determines if belongs to any of the existing open connections.

I particularly like the ability to apply configuration without the need to reboot the router.

Configuring for Singapore broadband service

For local ISP subscriber to setup their router, you will just need to logon to the web administration page of the D-Link DSL500G router and setup on the Quick Configuration in the Home folder.

Enable Operation Mode, set Connection Type to PPPoE LLC, leave the default VPI & VCI as 0, 100, enable DHCP & also Default Route. Type your login information for Username & Password, enter the DNS server settings and you're done.

It is recommended to remove the default DHCP address range (LAN folder, DHCP Server) which starts from 10.1.1.1 with a subnet mask of 255.0.0.0 since it is a Class A block which can address 16 million addresses (if there are that much users, this won't be the router to use) and it can get rather messy. Suggestion would be a Class C block starting from 192.168.1.1 with a subnet of 255.255.255.0 although it limits to usage to 253 users.

If you need to host servers behind the router, please read the next section.
